We had kindergarten roundup a week ago. I've been working on filling out forms since then. I've got most of them done. There's one question on one form that's unclear. I can't do the rest of the health form because it needs her doctor and her dentist to fill it out. I'm hesitating over the computer use contract because, although the terms are sensible, I object to asking my four year old to sign a contract that she can't yet read and understand. Well, that and some of the terms are kind of silly for kindergartners. They're the sort of things that one can ask of them but that one has to expect won't quite be followed all the time because kindergartners forget and need close supervision so that they can learn the right way to do things.
I mean, I wouldn't ask Delia to sign a contract swearing that she'll always say 'please' and 'thank you.' I correct her when she doesn't, and I expect other adult role models to prompt her, but I'm not going to demand a promise that she's not yet able to keep.
I am willing to sign something acknowledging that these are the rules the district expects children to abide by and that the instructors will enforce them. I'm also willing to explain the rules to Delia. I just expect that enforcement should be rather like enforcement of rules against running in the hall in that the severity of response should correspond to the age of the offender, the frequency of offenses and such.
There were three other kids from Delia's pre-school class at the round up, two girls and a boy. I'm hoping that at least one of the girls will be in Delia's class. (Of course, both girls come from grad student families who'll be moving on in a couple of years. Still, a friend on the first day is a big help.)
The school district wants kids to attend a week long camp called 'Safety Town' this summer. It's within our price range, and I've heard good things about it. The difficulty is, as always, transportation. I'm going to ask if there are any options available for getting kids to camp in absence of a car (and with taking the bus being difficult) and if they have facilities for parents to stick around since, if I do get Delia there, I won't have any way to go elsewhere while she's in the half day program.
