::sighs:: In forbidding Cordelia to watch The Suite Life of Zach and Cody (a Disney Channel sitcom), I seem to have made it hugely attractive to her. I don't regret banning the show. I still find it insulting on multiple levels and don't want Cordelia seeing any of the characters as people of whom I approve. My intention in banning it wasn't so much to keep Cordelia from ever seeing it as to register, strongly, that there are things about it of which I disapprove. I want her to remember, any time she sees it, that there's something about it that I think is Not The Way Things Should Be. I've talked to her a little about what I don't like-- the way the female characters are portrayed and treated, the way the title characters behave and treat the people around them, the fact that all the supporting characters are insulting caricatures.

My parents did that with The Simpsons, Ren and Stimpy, and Buffy when my brother and I were younger. Interestingly enough, they still don't like The Simpsons (Children -- Bart especially -- were disrespectful to their parents; they didn't want us emulating him) or Ren and Stimpy (crude potty humor) but my mom got into Buffy and Angel later on. I think that we were both at the age when Buffy came out that mom thought we were a little too young to watch some of the more soap-opera moments in that one (especially since the characters were just a bit older than we were).

There was also some degree of never, ever wanting to have the show on while I was in the room. ::laughs:: I figured that would go over better if I explained *why* I don't want to watch it.
