Jun. 10th, 2009 09:43 pmThere's currently a note posted on our refrigerator that says, "Delia makes all the rules." The s's are all backwards, but it's otherwise quite legible. Cordelia's also mad at us for laughing when she posted it.
Going back a few weeks, Cordelia's birthday party went well. The rain stayed away long enough for both party and soccer game. We had eight guests at the party, plus a mother and baby that stuck around (that family won't let their children visit other families without at least one parent present).
We ended up with an extra cake, one I made and one that our cleaning lady bought as a gift for Cordelia. I had wondered if she were going to because she did the year Cordelia turned four (and was out of the country last year on Cordelia's birthday), but she didn't say anything, so I baked. It's just as well I did as she dropped by with the cake ten minutes before the end of the party.
My birthday gathering nine days later was pleasantly laid back. The rain held off then, too. Cordelia and two other kids played to exhaustion while the adults hung out and talked. It wasn't a huge gathering, but it wasn't small either. I'm very grateful for those who took the time to come and hang out.
Cordelia's last soccer game was last Saturday. She's already eager to play in the fall. Rec & Ed is pushing people to sign up by the beginning of July. I was hoping to have a little more time to think about it. She'd rather (or so she says) take a dance or gymnastics class. We just have no way to get her to one. I'm tempted to look at the two places downtown, near the bus station, that offer martial arts classes, but I haven't gotten my act together on it. I rather suspect that it's not in the budget.
Cordelia's kindergarten had a 'graduation' today. The kids wore colorful paper caps with tassels and got certificates and a set of personalized stickers (a gift from the teacher). The principal informed the teacher that she'll be full time in the fall. I thought the teacher was going to cry. She was that happy.
Then we went to the classroom for food. I had made cupcakes, and most of them got eaten (I took in twenty-five. Three came home). Someone else bought a sheet cake with a congratulatory message. There were cookies, a veggie tray and a fruit tray.
We still have two more days of school left. Then we're facing summer. My father plans to come to Michigan in July for two or three weeks. Scott's brother and his family will also come for a few days in July. One of my cousins on my mother's side is getting married in early August, so she'll be in Michigan then. She may come earlier, too, or she may not. I don't know. She also doesn't know how long she'll be in Michigan in August.
Basically, Mom's waiting for my step-father to be able to make plans. He's been unable to make long term plans for travel due to having witnessed (and assisted in) an arrest. If the case ever goes to trial, he'll have to testify. A young teen (about 14) did something terrible and moronic and then fled. My step-father found him hiding in their doghouse and talked him into turning himself in. My impression from my mother is that my step-father is conflicted because the kid has utterly destroyed his own life. He'll be tried and sentenced as an adult. My step-father was more frightened of the police (complete with flak jackets and rifles) who were searching for the kid than he was of the kid. He told Mom that he was terrified that the police would shoot the kid and him.

Date: 2009-06-11 12:21 pm (UTC)We'll probably keep this note around for a long time. She wants to be in charge so badly.
Thanks for the birthday card, by the way. It was great to get a card
