Has anybody here watched Northern Exposure?

I have the first DVD from Netflix and have bogged down about ten minutes into the first episode. The embarrassment level is stopping me dead. Is that something that continues through the series or is it something that's there at first and goes away?

Basically, I need to decide whether to keep it or send it back. I've had the DVD more than a week and have made no progress.

I seem to remember it continuing throughout the series. Which I loved at the time, but suspect I wouldn't like now.

It's been a number of years since I watched it, but I used to watch it a lot. Much of the series' dynamic is based on fish-out-of-water syndrome, and they beat on that a lot the first few episodes until they realized that Joel and Maggie are the least interesting characters and started focusing on the rest of the town. A lot of that stuff is great, and I think worth the effort. And the guest-stars! Bill Irwin as The Flying Man.

But, yeah, you'll have to slog through some stuff that'll make you wince. You can take solace in the thought that Rob Morrow apparently thought he was going to follow David Duchovny and David Caruso as big-screen stars, and just like them got some humbling, and went back to TV.
