Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] dormouse_in_tea and iTunes, I've recaptured a small bit of my childhood. There was an album that my family owned when I was small that my sister and I used to sing along with. My mother got rid of it in her big garage sale when she stopped running the daycare center in our house. My sister and I both started looking for it when we had kids of our own.

The album is titled "More Songs to Grow On." I was confused by two things in my search. First, there's a book, a collection of songs, of the same name and containing the same songs. Second, I thought the songs were sung by Burl Ives.

The first meant that title searches got me nowhere, just the book over and over and over again. The second meant that my alternative search strategy kept ending up frustrated because the album title isn't listed in any Burl Ives discography that I could find.

As it turns out, adding '-books' to the search was what was needed. That brought up the album and revealed that the vocalist was Alan Mills. There is a certain similarity in sound to Burl Ives (Ives has a softer edge to his style than Mills does).

I've been happily listening to the songs for the last couple of days. They're not quite what I remember. Thirty years blurs memory quite a lot. I also don't know that Cordelia will love the songs as much as I did. She's got her favorite music already (Backyardigans, some Sesame Street, some Sandra Boynton). She'll get a few of the songs from time to time as I play them for me or as they come up randomly when I play the 'kid's music' folder while she's cleaning her room.
