I'm still working on preparing for the Science Olympiad. Both of my third graders dropped the event (one really, really didn't want to do the event. The other didn't want to do the event without her friend), so I've only got the two second graders.

I'm feeling overwhelmed by the material I need to teach and by the fact that I only have rock samples for a few of the minerals the kids are supposed to know. It's also not clear what rock types (as opposed to minerals) they're supposed to know. Scott found a little kit with five samples each of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. That will help. It just doesn't include everything the kids might be asked to identify.

I need to spend several hours this week looking up minerals and noting their characteristics so that I can make up a sheet for the kids. They can't memorize the details without having the details.

I bought three books (two of which are useful) and have two books from the library. Hopefully, I can find the information I need in those books. I may also resort to Wikipedia and hope that nobody's been messing with the entries for things like graphite and quartz. Pictures are going to be harder because I can't print those out for the kids. They'll have to study whatever pictures I find during practice sessions.

It looks like we're going to end up practicing on Saturdays, at least until soccer season gets going. I wanted Wednesdays, but they're impossible for the other family involved. We could do Fridays, but that's the one day when Delia can invite her friend, Emi, over (Wednesdays don't work for Emi's family). Monday is a possibility if I'm willing to rush Delia all afternoon-- It would be practice from four to five, homework immediately after that, dinner immediately after that then either swim class or Brownies. I'd rather not (and she'd rather not. I discussed the scheduling with her. She said it was really hard. She didn't like any of the possibilities, either).

We had the worst time with Science Olympiad, frankly. The prep materials kind of... aren't, at least for 8th grade astronomy.

The bridge building was good, though.

It seemed like parents and teachers with prior experience in a category did okay prepping and leading the kids, and those without were lost. At least, I was. I wish you luck! And maybe find someone who did your segment another year?
