Jul. 12th, 2017 05:18 pmWe're now an hour past the OMG throw out everything in the fridge point and have no idea when we'll have power again. They're now saying 7, but the original estimate was 3, and a neighboring area has been told 11. It's 5:30-ish now.
I'm with Scott at the place where he does PT because there's AC. Cordelia's still at the library, waiting for a hold to come in.
I'm depressed about all the food we're going to have to pitch and about how much replacing it will cost.

Date: 2017-07-12 10:41 pm (UTC)About the food, I will just say that the USDA guidelines are VERY conservative. It's their job to be. Everyone has their own comfort level with this stuff, but for me personally I would only worry about meat, fresh milk, and maybe mayonnaise. Eggs, cheese, yogurt, most condiments, etc. should be fine for a whole day in a closed fridge, especially if you plan to eat them in the next couple days.

Date: 2017-07-13 01:40 am (UTC)We had a series of "throw out all the food yet again" power outages over the last year or two. I keep fantasizing about getting an array of solar panels and a giant battery so that my house would be protected against future power outages. Sigh.... The five-days-in-February power outage that affected a lot of the city last winter (though thankfully not me) was really scary.
