We caught one mouse overnight. I can still hear something moving in the kitchen, so there has to have been more than one. From the sound of it, there's still more than one. We're going to need to wash a lot of things from the cupboards holding our cooking dishes. I put a bunch of things into the fridge on the theory that we're not likely to get them inside that.

At least one mouse brazenly ran through the living room while I was watching and then ran back again shortly after. It stopped and looked at me, but apparently I didn't look threatening.

My new (used) laptop arrived yesterday. Scott got everything from the Timecapsule backup and noticed at the same time that the reason I had needed so much storage was that all of his files that he was so very sure he'd deleted were still on there. That's the only reason that the new laptop's storage capacity is enough, so I'm still thinking that I want to weed some things.

I ended up folding yesterday's writing word count into the month of April because I didn't track words while I didn't have a laptop. I don't think that that 1K or so I wrote will make that much difference. My April word count was 28166 words which brings the year count to 143903 words. The Sky High behemoth has almost reached 60K words across 15 parts.

Today is a half day for Cordelia's school, so she'll be home soon. I'll head out for my doctor's appointment about an hour and a half after she gets home. If all goes well, she and I will meet downtown for dinner (me going into town to transfer to a less crowded bus that will leave me at the top of the hill is more than worth the extra time).

We've been battling mice for a couple of years now. I set traps at first, but the mice weren't very interested in them, and I kept finding poops in horrifying places, so eventually I gave in and hired a critter place to deal with it. They make regular visits every three months, and when they missed one in January we had mice in the house again by March. Ugh.

They say that it's important to check the outside of your house for any holes that they could be getting in through -- even a 1/4 inch hole could be a problem, or missing caulk where a pipe goes through the wall. If you find any, they say to put in steel wool or copper mesh, then caulk. They've done some of that at my house, and it helps. Though mice still get in anyway, somewhere else. For a while we had a highway of them climbing straight up a patch of brick and getting in through a hole several feet up in the air. Sigh....
