Both of Cordelia's scheduled soccer games for this weekend were canceled. The notice came on Friday. The fields were so soaked that they wouldn't be usable by Sunday even. We were just as happy to skip yesterday's game. It was in the 30s. There was even a sprinkling of snow.
In the afternoon yesterday, we had the Science Olympiad (2nd and 3rd graders compete in the morning with 4th and 5th graders in the afternoon). Cordelia's first event started at 12:30. That was Circuit Wizardry, the event Scott coached. Cordelia thinks they did okay on the written part of the test, but they couldn't get the LED in their circuit to light when they designed and built a circuit. They were taking the thing apart to rebuild it when time was called, so they got no credit for the circuit at all.
The second event was Disease Detectives. Cordelia wasn't sure how they did. She didn't feel like the whole thing was awful, but I don't think she was certain of the answers they'd put down.
Nobody from Cordelia's school placed in any event. I'm told that there were tears in the morning. The kids in the afternoon were disappointed and sad, but I don't think anybody cried. The kids who did Straw Tower were particularly disappointed because they knew they'd built a good structure. It held something like twenty-six blocks.
There weren't any fifth graders on the team. There were seven fourth graders from our school. I don't think ours was the smallest team, but it was certainly close.
I found the whole thing overwhelming. They set up tables in the cafeteria and give each school a set of tables. Ours was way in the back, near the windows. Being in the middle would have been worse, but I still had a hard time with so many people around. I took an Ativan, so I wasn't panicked, but I did kind feel trapped. I couldn't bring myself to wander even though there were a bunch of science related exhibits and a lot of raffle baskets to look at.
After the awards ceremony, we went to Gourmet Garden for dinner. Cordelia actually ate pretty well for a change. She's decided that she likes fried rice. She used to get lo mein and pick at it. We couldn't persuade her to try the dishes Scott and I were sharing.
After dinner, we stopped at Plum Market to pick up dessert. I got a tiny cheesecake. It was okay, not spectacular. It claimed to be kahlua flavored, but I couldn't taste that.
Today, we'll finally get to the grocery shopping (Scott had PT after work on Friday and couldn't do it then). There'll be a trip to the library, and Cordelia has a friend coming over for a few hours later on. I've started the laundry. At some point, Scott and I will change our sheets. I'm determined to get that done. I also have to cook tonight. I wish I had something creative in mind to do with the chicken. Mostly, I brine it and then bake it. That's about as much as I have energy for. Scott sometimes gets creative when he has time.

Date: 2013-04-21 05:02 pm (UTC)At least this year, I wasn't a coach. Coaching is an added stress because I can't help feeling responsible for how well or poorly the kids do. Unfortunately, apart from announcing the top five teams, they don't reveal how the kids do. That makes figuring out how to improve the coaching hard.
