I don't know where the last couple of weeks have gone. Looking back I can't see that I've gotten all that much done. My writing has slowed to a crawl because I can't seem to concentrate enough to put words on the screen. I've ended up spending time wandering around online without finding much of interest, reaching the point of knowing that there's a vast array of information and amusement out there if I can only find it and not being able to summon the energy or interest to search through the dreck.

The change in temperature hasn't helped either. We've crossed the line from summer when the thermostat reading 73 would still seem too warm into winter when 73 still means layers of clothing and fingers that don't work quite right. Scott and I have spent the last couple of days looking for the small heater we bought for me to use in the basement and finally located it in the spare bedroom (that's why it took us so long. We expected it to be in the basement). I plan to set it up down there tomorrow. I'll have to clear a safe space for it because things have gotten rather crowded down there, but I think I can manage.

Scott had last week off, and some of my distraction can be put down to that simple fact. In grand tradition, he developed a cold during the first couple of days of his vacation and is still fighting it. (My current theory is that this happens because once he's on vacation he completely shifts his sleep schedule, staying up hours longer than he would normally.) Naturally, he didn't get everything done that he'd hoped to. The Linux test has had to be postponed because he didn't sign up far enough in advance (he needed to give them several days notice but didn't try to sign up until Tuesday at which point Wednesday, Thursday and Friday were no longer options from the testing center's point of view).

He did get the loft for the computer desk built, though. We now have the scanner, the tape player and the turntable up there. The whole point of the exercise is to let me burn CDs from my collection of vinyl and of the various bits of filk I have on tape that we got from various live performances. (Well, maybe not the whole point...) Scott also spent a lot of time struggling with trying to network our various computers. The machine he'd gotten from his sister proved not to be up to the task of serving as router, so he went to the university's property disposition office and picked up a cheap hard drive that could do the job. Now he just needs to get all the software where he wants it.

I found someone who agreed to beta read my Weiss Kreuz story. I'd wanted someone besides LunarGeography because she knows how my mind works and knows what I'm trying to accomplish with the story. That means that she can easily bridge gaps in the exposition that other readers might fall into and can interpret even the vaguest of pronouns (I suppose it comes of all the years of gaming together... I know that our ability to do that in the Wednesday Amber game has occasionally made the other two players feel like they're missing something. Which I suppose they are).

At any rate, I sent off the first 28 pages to my new beta reader and have been waiting to hear back. Given the length of what I sent and the probability that this person has some sort of life in addition to beta reading... Well, let's just say that I'm not holding my breath. In the meantime, I'm inching forward with new material and contemplating rewriting the next section. I want to get the rewrite done before I send part two to the beta reader since the disconnect between the two sections will be extremely jarring otherwise, and part of me thinks that working on the rewrite might require less effort, or at least effort of a very different sort.

We've started getting serious about getting rid of some of our accumulation of junk. I offered a few things to some friends by e-mail yesterday. Our down comforter had a new home by evening (Scott allergic to down. My parents gave the thing to me before Scott and I started dating, but I haven't been able to use it in years). Dorothy was very happy to get it because she has no spare blankets except for afghans and is expecting a visit from her mother in the next few days. Jeannette has spoken for the cast iron cookware (wedding presents that we don't use any more because I can no longer reliably lift them). Nobody seems interested in the unpowered treadmill, so that will probably go to charity. No one spoke for the old toaster either.

One of my goals for this week is to clean out my closet. I haven't gone through my clothes since before we bought this house five years ago. I have to figure out what I'm never ever going to wear again and get rid of it. I expect that some of it can be donated, but some of it... (For example, the shirt I'm wearing now-- I got it cheap because of an error in manufacturing in the cuffs. Due to that same error, it's now got holes worn all around the wrists. It still covers everything important, but... I have no desire to wear it in public and don't think it's in sufficiently good shape to donate.) LunarGeography has offered to help me with the task, and I think that her presence will help me to be properly ruthless.
