Tuesday was a big day. Delia and I attended our first play group. All of the other children are toddlers, but I know two of the couples whose children attend, so it was a good social occasion for me. Delia's really too young to care about other kids except as interesting things to watch.

Valerie came and picked us up and drove us the session. It had been going to be out near Packard and Carpenter, but the child whose mother was to host had fallen out of his crib and broken his arm, so we had a last minute change of venue. The new place turned out to be near my childhood stomping grounds, within sight of a playground I'd frequented (which was in a park we'd generally cut through on the way to school). I thought briefly that the house in question might be one that I'd actually visited during a post-Christmas caroling Girl Scout party, but the layout inside was wrong.

It turns out that one of the parents there, the hostess in fact, uses the same pediatrician that we do. That was reassuring since I didn't exactly do all of the checking that I probably ought to have done before selecting this practice. I mainly looked that Scott's insurance covered them, they were certified and they were easily accessible by bus.

Valerie drove us out to the pediatrician after play group (part of why the topic had come up earlier) for Delia's two month appointment. Scott's mother met us there so that we'd have a way home afterward. The timing worked out perfectly. I'd been a little worried that she'd have trouble finding the place, in spite of having been there before, or that Valerie and I would be late getting there, or...

As of Tuesday, Delia weighed 9 pounds, 2 ounces. The pediatrician's measurement of her length was 21 inches, but we'd measured her at home a couple of days before and got 23 inches. I'm not sure why the difference, possibly it's just the fact that measuring a wriggling baby isn't all that easy. I'm more inclined to think that our measurement's closer to correct simply because she's getting too long for her clothes. The doctor's (nurse's actually) measurement would still leave her smack in the middle of the expected length range for her age.

There were four shots at this appointment. She got them from two nurses so that they could do two sets of simultaneous shots, each poking a different leg. The intent was to decrease the trauma all around. I held Delia's arms for the procedure so that she wouldn't flail and hit the needles or anything else. The shots left her a bit feverish and very sleepy. The fever was completely expected and didn't go too high; we just gave her some liquid Tylenol. The sleepiness was much better than the other alternative-- The doctor told me that babies either got cranky or sleepy after shots and that I should hope for sleepy.

After that, while Delia was sleeping, my mother-in-law helped me get the bumper on the crib, the Pooh mobile assembled and generally make the crib habitable. The only thing we don't have yet is mattress pads. I'd thought we'd bought some, but not only could I not find them but Scott tells me that he's quite sure we didn't buy any. That'll be important when Delia starts sleeping in the crib. Right now, though, I'm just using it as another safe place to set her down. I'm trying to encourage her to like being there, but 10-15 minutes is about her limit.

The rest of the week passed without much happening until Friday when LunarGeography stopped by. She brought the last disk of Yami no Matsuei. We'd watched the earlier episodes some time back, fansubbed, so I didn't feel that I needed to see the DVD version of those yet (I'll be borrowing them from her later on, of course. The quality difference is immense). I simply wanted to see what happened in that last arc. I must say that I think Muraki's underlying motivation marks him as one of the more completely insane villains I've run into.

After that, we talked about fanfics. I bounced some "Rheotaxis" ideas off of her, and she talked about the various stories she's working on. She's progressing very slowly on all of them because none of them will tolerate being put on the back burner.

I enjoyed the visit a lot, but she was definitely exhausted and rather stressed out. Getting out was probably good for her, but at the same time it took up time that she could have been sleeping.

Saturday, Scott worked 3am to 7am. Originally, he was supposed to work 3am to 3pm, so this was better than we'd feared. He got home about 9am, just as Delia and I were getting up for a diaper change and feeding. What with one thing and another, it was past 10 when we all got back to bed.

Power outage and party )

I'm considering rejoining a writers' group that I was a part of many years ago. I left it largely because I was the only person there who wasn't writing fan fiction. I simply didn't fit well with the group. At this point, I am writing fan fiction, admittedly not in a fandom any of the other writers know. If I do rejoin, I will likely start work again on the Ruroni Kenshin fic that LunarGeography and I had planned out last summer because I think "Rheotaxis" might be a little much for at least one member of the group.

The main reason I'm thinking twice about it is that the most prolific writer in the group, when last I was a part of it, wrote poorly, at least in terms of grammar and spelling. Additionally, the stories that most interested her weren't generally of the style that I enjoy. I have yet to look at her current stuff, so I may find that this has all changed. She's gotten into writing Spike/Buffy fics, and I have trouble seeing that written with a lot of WAFF, but... People have surprised me before.
