Scott's family traditionally provides wishlists for birthdays so that people can buy something that's wanted. When it was my turn last month, I couldn't come up with anything people could buy, so I listed tasks around the house/yard and time consuming errands to be run, things that needed to be done that I couldn't do on my own and that Scott didn't have time for. Today, Scott's parents came down to give me my birthday present.

Scott's mother took me shopping for dress shoes while Scott's father worked on disassembling the ramp. I don't know when I'll next wear dress shoes-- Christmas most likely-- but I needed a pair. My last pair, originally purchased for my wedding, twenty years ago, literally disintegrated under me at my cousin's wedding two or three years ago. I expected to have an awful time finding anything because I need flats or as close as I can get.

The first store we went to, Mast Shoes, didn't fill me with confidence. The prices were through the roof, upwards of $150 a pair for the things that interested me. I did find one pair of shoes on sale for about $50 that I found comfortable and somewhat dressy, but my mother-in-law labeled them not dressy enough for real formal occasions. I was afraid I wouldn't find anything better, so I bought them anyway.

Next, we crossed town to go to DSW. I'd never been there before. I thought I had, but I was misremembering where we bought Delia's most recent sneakers. DSW turned out to have quite a selection of dressy flats. I tried on about a dozen pairs, and there were others I didn't try on because I didn't like how they looked. I ended up with a pair for about $40. My feet won't be rejoicing when I wear them because they're not going to get worn enough to stretch and be comfortable, but they'll be okay. Now I have to come up with occasions to wear dress shoes to justify my purchases.

Scott's father ran into trouble disassembling the ramp. The screws wouldn't come out. The ramp was built solidly, and it's been out in the weather for nine years. He had to cut it to pieces and ran out of steam before he could finish. The pieces he couldn't deal with are piled behind our garage to await Scott's attention. The pieces he could deal with fill our trash bin and compost bin (he needed to put that stuff somewhere. We'll have to get it out and get rid of it gradually. It's too big for compost pick up).

My mother-in-law and I had lunch at Cafe Marie. I was surprised that my father-in-law didn't join us, but apparently he packed a lunch of some sort. After lunch, we went to the yarn shop near our local Kroger. I think it's called Knit Around. My mother-in-law needed a particular kind of yarn to make crocheted necklaces, and buying it there was cheaper than buying it online and paying the shipping. She wasn't altogether pleased with the colors available, but she said it was better to see the actual colors in person rather than relying on computer images that can be misleading.

Scott's got to go to work early tomorrow, so he's in bed already. I'm trying to work on my fic, but I've hit a sticking point. I don't have a good voice for one of the characters, and what she says and does decides how this section goes. I'm probably going to sleep on it and see what tomorrow brings. The moderator for the exchange has extended the deadline by a week, so I can afford one night off.
