Jan. 6th, 2013 11:14 amOur New Year's Eve gathering was smaller than usual. I was late getting the invitations out, and most people had other plans. We got a couple and their eight year old son, and we invited a friend of Cordelia's, the same one who helped us decorate our tree. We'd hoped to have Cordelia's friend spend the night, but her parents weren't comfortable with that, so she went home at nine. Cindy and Linda also went home at nine. I was pleased that the three kids played well together. I was a little afraid that Cordelia and her friend would exclude the eight year old, either for being a third grader or for being a boy.
The New Year's Eve turkey got a little dry. This was the first time I cooked a turkey without stuffing it, and it got done considerably earlier than I expected. I made the 'stuffing' in a pan, baking it after the turkey came out of the oven. It's considerably easier to do that way. If it weren't so heavy on the butter and so not particularly good for us, I'd make it more often. We all enjoy it. I did change how I made the stuffing in one other way-- Usually I use the bacon grease from making the bacon wrapped dates for Christmas when I make the stuffing. I couldn't do that this time if I wanted Cordelia's friend to be able to eat it, so I just used butter. I haven't figured out what else to do with the bacon grease. It'll probably end up in the trash. We don't cook using that sort of thing very often.
Staying up until midnight gets harder every year. Cordelia's enthusiasm carried me through this year. She and Scott played Wii games after everybody else had left. We had just enough sparkling juice left from dinner to be able to toast each other at midnight.
Most days this week, Cordelia has had someone over to play. Thursday, it was both of
cherydactyl's two daughters. Friday, Scott's sister and her daughter came down and took us out. We had lunch at Wendy's and then went to Kohl's to shop for clothes for the girls. Cordelia was uninterested in the things she actually needs-- pants. She's outgrown all her size 8 stuff and needs some size 10s. Instead, she chose to try on a couple of dresses and some shirts. I had difficulty with the whole process because, at Kohl's, the price on the tag has nothing to do with the actual cost of the item. One has to take the item to a kiosk and scan the barcode to find out the price. I didn't want to make that trip very often. I did end up buying Cordelia a sweater vest that she adores. It was $13, and she's worn it pretty much constantly since we got it. It's white, with faux fur, so Scott and I have decreed that she's not to wear it while eating. We need to limit how often we wash it.
Yesterday, Scott painted the trim around the backdoor and replaced the coat hooks next to the door. The coat hook board had fallen out of the wall on New Year's Eve. It just pulled straight out. Scott thinks this version has better support and should hold, even under all the stuff we normally pile on those hooks.
In the evening, Cordelia's four year old friend, the one who moved to Indiana last May, came over to spend the night. The girls played in the basement and played with the Wii, Mario Kart and Just Dance Disney Party. The four year old wasn't dreadfully good at either game, but she had a blast anyway. We got them in bed about nine, and I think they were asleep by ten. They were up about seven this morning. The four year old has a rather piercing voice, even when she's being quiet, so Scott and I didn't get much (if any) sleep after the girls woke.
About eight-thirty, Scott and I admitted that we weren't asleep any longer, and we got up. Scott made pancakes, as he usually does on Sundays. The four year old's mother picked her up about half an hour ago. Cordelia was sorry to see her go. Cordelia really enjoys playing with her. It's a chance to play little girl games without worrying that it makes her less of a big girl.
