Our New Year's Eve gathering was smaller than usual. I was late getting the invitations out, and most people had other plans. We got a couple and their eight year old son, and we invited a friend of Cordelia's, the same one who helped us decorate our tree. We'd hoped to have Cordelia's friend spend the night, but her parents weren't comfortable with that, so she went home at nine. Cindy and Linda also went home at nine. I was pleased that the three kids played well together. I was a little afraid that Cordelia and her friend would exclude the eight year old, either for being a third grader or for being a boy.

The New Year's Eve turkey got a little dry. This was the first time I cooked a turkey without stuffing it, and it got done considerably earlier than I expected. I made the 'stuffing' in a pan, baking it after the turkey came out of the oven. It's considerably easier to do that way. If it weren't so heavy on the butter and so not particularly good for us, I'd make it more often. We all enjoy it. I did change how I made the stuffing in one other way-- Usually I use the bacon grease from making the bacon wrapped dates for Christmas when I make the stuffing. I couldn't do that this time if I wanted Cordelia's friend to be able to eat it, so I just used butter. I haven't figured out what else to do with the bacon grease. It'll probably end up in the trash. We don't cook using that sort of thing very often.

Staying up until midnight gets harder every year. Cordelia's enthusiasm carried me through this year. She and Scott played Wii games after everybody else had left. We had just enough sparkling juice left from dinner to be able to toast each other at midnight.

Most days this week, Cordelia has had someone over to play. Thursday, it was both of [livejournal.com profile] cherydactyl's two daughters. Friday, Scott's sister and her daughter came down and took us out. We had lunch at Wendy's and then went to Kohl's to shop for clothes for the girls. Cordelia was uninterested in the things she actually needs-- pants. She's outgrown all her size 8 stuff and needs some size 10s. Instead, she chose to try on a couple of dresses and some shirts. I had difficulty with the whole process because, at Kohl's, the price on the tag has nothing to do with the actual cost of the item. One has to take the item to a kiosk and scan the barcode to find out the price. I didn't want to make that trip very often. I did end up buying Cordelia a sweater vest that she adores. It was $13, and she's worn it pretty much constantly since we got it. It's white, with faux fur, so Scott and I have decreed that she's not to wear it while eating. We need to limit how often we wash it.

Yesterday, Scott painted the trim around the backdoor and replaced the coat hooks next to the door. The coat hook board had fallen out of the wall on New Year's Eve. It just pulled straight out. Scott thinks this version has better support and should hold, even under all the stuff we normally pile on those hooks.

In the evening, Cordelia's four year old friend, the one who moved to Indiana last May, came over to spend the night. The girls played in the basement and played with the Wii, Mario Kart and Just Dance Disney Party. The four year old wasn't dreadfully good at either game, but she had a blast anyway. We got them in bed about nine, and I think they were asleep by ten. They were up about seven this morning. The four year old has a rather piercing voice, even when she's being quiet, so Scott and I didn't get much (if any) sleep after the girls woke.

About eight-thirty, Scott and I admitted that we weren't asleep any longer, and we got up. Scott made pancakes, as he usually does on Sundays. The four year old's mother picked her up about half an hour ago. Cordelia was sorry to see her go. Cordelia really enjoys playing with her. It's a chance to play little girl games without worrying that it makes her less of a big girl.

Cordelia has tried two more teas from the collection of samples [personal profile] kyrielle sent us. She liked the acai berry from Stash and didn't like the cherry cosmo from Tea Forte. I'm hoping to try another one today. I think I'll encourage her to try the remaining sample from Tea Forte. It would help to know whether or not she likes it if I decide to order some of the coco truffle, which she did like.

I'm going to ask Scott to stop at either Tea Haus or the Spice Merchant today to get a couple of tea strainers. I've shown him pictures of what I'm looking for, so hopefully, he'll be able to find it. I can't go because Cordelia has a friend coming over. I have to stay home to supervise.

Cordelia's been sledding most days this week. Wednesday, she concluded that sledding alone isn't any fun. That was partly because she doesn't like doing things alone and partly because I won't let her go to Leslie Science and Nature Center alone. Leslie has some great hills. The places nearer to us are either shorter and less steep or have a fence at the bottom so that kids have to ditch in order to avoid running into it.

Cordelia's been spending a lot of time watching the DVDs she got for Christmas. I'm actually starting to get sick of Teen Titans and Young Justice. I mean, they're better than Disney channel sitcoms, but they're all we've watched for days now.

I haven't managed much writing during the last couple of weeks. I have things I want to write that have vague shapes in my mind. With luck, I'll get some writing done tomorrow and during the rest of next week. I did finally find our missing copy of The Magician's Nephew (only after I bought a replacement, of course). For some unknown reason, it was in Cordelia's room. I'm really puzzled by that because I wouldn't have taken it in there and because she's not interested in The Chronicles of Narnia. We got her through The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Prince Caspian, but she rejected The Voyage of the Dawn Treader when we were about half way through.

We have to come up with something new to read to Cordelia at bedtime. We finished Alcatraz Versus the Shattered Lens a couple of days ago, and she's rejected everything that I've put forward. She won't even look at the blurbs to see if they're interesting to her. I suggested Dealing with Dragons, Wren to the Rescue, The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, Escape to Witch Mountain and Ordinary Jack, among others.

Does anybody know-- How bad is the Princess Tutu dub? I'm interested in showing the series to Cordelia, and I'm not sure she's prepared to watch it subbed. We've never tried anything in a foreign language with her. We do keep closed captioning on on the TV, so she has some experience with subtitles, but I'm not sure she's ready to rely entirely on subtitles.
