Naturally another hold came in to the library last night in between when we were there and when the library closed. We were there at 5:30, and the place closed at 6:00, so I hoped we were safe, but a hold came in. They only keep holds for six days, so this hold will expire on Saturday. We usually go to the library on Sunday (Scott's schedule permitting) because parking is free then. At any rate, this means I have a choice-- I can cancel the hold/let it expire, or I can go downtown mid-week to pick it up. I'm not sure which I'll choose. I think it will depend on how warm it gets later in the week.

From the library, we went straight to Barnes & Noble. Cordelia had just finished reading The Name of This Book Is Secret by Pseudonymous Bosch, and she wanted the remaining four books in the series immediately. To get them from the library, she'd have had to wait for them to come in, and she was too impatient to do that. She was all set to pay for the books herself until she figured out what four books at $8 each would cost. She has the money, but she hates to spend it. I ended up paying for two of the books while she paid for the other two. She'll definitely read these, so I don't feel bad about buying them.

We didn't end up getting bubble tea. I think Scott was so focused on getting to Barnes & Noble so that he could get home and be miserable with his cold in peace that he forgot. Cordelia forgot, too, or at least didn't say anything about it. I remembered, but I have trouble asking for treats for myself, especially when it requires putting somebody else out.

We've heard from the coach for spring soccer. We have the same coach as last fall, and he wants Scott to assist again. Unfortunately for us, practices will be Wednesdays, so we're going to have to reschedule Scott's Babylon 5 game for two and a half months. Practices don't start until the 2nd of April, so we've got a little time to figure things out. We have a game session this Wednesday, and hopefully, we'll set a time then. Three of the five other players have weighed in so far, and they all like Tuesday with Thursday possible but not as good.

Scott's also got to try to schedule his Science Olympiad practices. He's been doing them on the weekends, but the other parents have indicated that that's not going to work well in the long run (and this weekend, he had to run two separate practices, one for the fourth graders on Saturday and one for the second graders on Sunday. Not sustainable). I suggested Monday nights as we're pretty sure we won't be doing Babylon 5 then. I suspect Friday nights wouldn't work for people who want the weekend clear, but it would be our second choice.

Scott's been running his practices at the the Traverwood library branch (free parking), but he's thinking he may have to switch to doing them downtown because he needs to find a space where he can set up his projector with his planetarium program and have the kids identify constellations. Traverwood simply doesn't have any good spaces for that. The downtown library does, but it's by no means sure that they'll be available when he wants them as they're first come, first served. He checked out the available spaces when we were there on Sunday. He thinks they'll work, and he's hopeful that something will be available because they weren't all in use. I didn't point out that Sunday, in the hour before closing, might well be less busy than a week night.

Cordelia dogears pages in her books, library books, too. I've tried to break her of the habit, but she doesn't see anything wrong with it. It's not that she doesn't have bookmarks; she must have at least half a dozen nice ones, and she can get bookmarks from the school library any time. She just doesn't like bookmarks. I think that she feels they get in the way and that she doesn't like having one more thing to keep track of. I was brought up to believe that dogearing was bad, that it damaged books, so I cringe a little each time I see her do it.

Looking at the predicted weather for the rest of the week, the best day to go downtown would be Thursday. Unfortunately, that's the one day I have other commitments and can't go. Friday will be equally warm, but they're predicting rain. 48 F may be warm compared to what we've had, but with rain, 48 F is cold. I suppose I could just deal with the cold and wind and go tomorrow or Wednesday. Both days are supposed to be in the high twenties, and my coat is adequate to that. If I go at the right time, I could get lunch and bubble tea at TK Wu's. I have no idea what the food there is like, but it can't hurt to try it.

I'm dreading the first soccer game of the season which is supposed to be April 12th (practices start on the 2nd, but I don't have to go to those). Judging by how it's been, it will not be warm by the 12th. After a cold game or practice, Cordelia always swears that she won't play soccer again, but by the time registration time comes around, she always wants to.

Cordelia has decided that she wants to play softball this summer. I have to remember to register her for that. Unfortunately, the coach she's had the last two years probably won't be back. He wanted to move his daughters up to a travel team. In a way, this is good because he wasn't a great coach. In a way, this is bad because he was at least moderately local-- Last year, practices were at the field by Cordelia's school. Whoever coaches this time will likely want us to cross town for practice. It should also be interesting-- I believe fifth grade is when the games change from coach pitched to girl pitched. I hope they start the girls off easy that way. None of them will have any experience pitching.
