On Wednesday, I took Cordelia to the orthodontist. The verdict is that the teeth will come in, probably not in an ideal position but still in. We're to come back in a year to see how things are going. The appointment was minimally invasive, and the orthodontist we saw took pains to put Cordelia at ease. Getting there and finding everything in the Dental School was the hardest part.
After the appointment, Cordelia and I went for lunch and then for bubble tea. It involved crossing campus which I'd hoped to avoid, but we managed it. I let Cordelia order calpico instead of green tea.
We've been letting Cordelia have dairy and soy this summer. It doesn't seem to be giving her rash. She's been mostly clear since the weather's been good. The exception has been the two weeks she spent in camp. As far as I can tell, either sunscreen or bug spray causes rash for her. I don't know which. I'm seriously considering testing it this week with one arm for sunscreen and one arm for bug spray. Maybe they're both a problem.
I don't know what we'll do about rash as we get into colder weather. From what I understand, we can expect the eczema to come back full force. We'll probably let Cordelia keep eating soy and dairy unless we see some correlation to when the rash gets bad. I suppose it's possible they're a problem in cold, dry weather and not in warm, humid weather. I don't know.
Scott's attempting to teach Cordelia to ride a bike. She's reluctant. She just wants her training wheels back, permanently.
I'm trying to enjoy our last week off from school. I get morning snuggles from Cordelia most days, and I'm encouraging that. After Labor Day, we'll be back to me dragging her out of bed and her being cranky.
I'm still off of coffee (I stopped drinking it after the surgery and just haven't gone back to it). I'm not sure I'll be able to keep it up when I'm getting up at seven every morning. I'm going to try, though. I'd rather not have a caffeine habit.

Date: 2010-08-30 12:11 am (UTC)Poor kid. A lot of sunscreens are problematic for me, too. I'm more likely to be able to tolerate the lotion types with spf-15 than the single-function sunscreens, but I expect you've experimented with a bunch of stuff already. (When I was a kid, spf-15 was really, really, strong. Do you remember that? I started getting sunburn after 20 minutes, in the middle of a sunny day, and spf-15 was supposed to extend that to 5 hours. I'm not likely to be out more than that.) There are still a lot of times I put on sunscreen, go out, come inside, and go right to the sink to wash off the sunscreen.
I did not stop using training wheels until I was 9. (I'm not sure if that's something Cordelia should know...) In retrospect, I think I was just waiting until I was really good and ready. Plus a safety margin, because I was a timid kid, in some ways. But after I WAS good and ready, I was a happy** and confident* rider for decades.
*Such a confident rider that a remarkable number of accidents failed to shake my confidence. Fortunately, Cordelia is growing up in a stronger culture of safety than I did.
** I was really unhappy about having to stop riding.

Date: 2010-08-30 01:16 am (UTC)We haven't experimented with different sunscreens yet. They're so expensive, and Scott and I rarely use them. I've mostly been letting Cordelia go out without sunscreen. She's never burned so far. She does have patches of lighter colored skin on her arms everywhere where she's had rash. I put sunscreen on her for camp because that's nearly seven hours outside (same reason for the bug spray).
