Drat. There's something wrong with the dryer. Scott cleaned out the ventilation pipe on Saturday, and I'm really hoping he just knocked something loose that will be easy to fix.

Cordelia put her clothes in to dry some time between 7:00 and 7:45. About half an hour ago (so 11:30), I realized that the dryer was still running. I went downstairs and shut it off. The clothes were dry but cool to the touch when they ought to be (going by the settings on the dryer) hot. I'm more concerned by the lack of heat than by the fact that it kept running. We can go downstairs and turn the dryer off. Setting an alarm will make that fairly straightforward. We'd just have to time laundry so that we weren't leaving the house or going to bed while the dryer was running.

The dryer is about 18 years old, and replacing it would be an expense we really would have difficulty with. I also strongly suspect that we wouldn't be able to find anything nearly as durable as a replacement.

ETA: Scott says he turned off the gas when he took down the ventilation pipe and probably forgot to turn it back on, so that part is easy to fix. The dryer running for four hours... We'll see, I suppose.

Depending on what the sensors measure, having the heat working may be enough to get it to stop. Fingers crossed!

Ours has TWO internal fuses, and one controls the timer, while the other controls the actual motor. If one blows, it won't turn, if the other blows, it'll turn for-ev-er. NEITHER means you need a new dryer.

Excellent! You're so lucky to have a gas dryer! We've got electric, even though the stove IS set for gas! Apparently, it was taken OUT by the previous homeowner, who didn't like gas dryers.

If it has a moisture sensor, it may have kept running because it sensed that the clothes weren't dry yet. So turning the gas back on may be all that is needed. I hope.

I'm glad it worked correctly.

Maybe I'm overly careful, but I try never to run the clothes dryer or dishwasher when I'm sleeping, because of the risk of fire. That's what Consumer Reports has recommended in the past, and it makes sense to me.

I've also been paranoid about an unattended clothes dryer, ever since an old M-net pal named Linda (darn, can't remember her login, she died years ago) reported a house fire from her dryer.

(Um, the dying was from Linda's long-running health issues and had nothing to do with a dryer.)

So, I don't run the dryer while sleeping, or when we are farther away than the backyard.

The washing machine doesn't worry me, for some reason.
